Do now: Log in to your computer. essay is Due on Wednesday, 10/30 Begin writing you essay today: In the poems, “The Call” by Jesse Pope, and “Dulce Et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen, clear messages about war are presented.
Intro paragraph: • Thesis statement. Address the question: In the poems, “The Call” by Jesse Pope, and “Dulce Et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen, clear messages about war are presented. • Say what that message is: “The Call” by Jesse Pope calls young men to sign up for war or be seen as cowards. “Dulce,” however, suggests that the idea that dying for your country is not honorable. • Each poet uses a different persuasive technique to present his message: Pope uses pathos, an emotional argument, to pique our sense of pride and shame. Owen uses ethos to establish his speaker as a credible source on the subject of war and uses pathos and imagery to present a horrible picture of death, suggesting dying for your country is not “sweet” or “right.”
First and second body paragraphs: • Discuss one poem at a time. • Summarize the argument in the poem. Tell us who the speaker is. Present one image that reinforces his message. • Discuss the persuasive technique (Ethos, Pathos, or Logos) and how the poet tries to persuade to see his message.
Third body paragraph: • Think about each argument and pick which is more persuasive. • Write about WHY one poem is more persuasive than the other.
Conclusion: • Restate your thesis. • Tell us, again, which poem is more persuasive. • Conclude with a general idea about the subject of war.
