As a way to contain health care costs organizations may try to reduce the number of participants in their plans, especially for married workers. Spousal surcharges (i.e., a set monthly or annual fee in addition to the employee + spouse employee contribution) are imposed on employees who opt to include their spouse in your organization’s health care benefit program even though the spouse is eligible for his/her own employer’s health coverage.

Its always been that way for us- Varies based on plan selected and whether part time or full time AND whether smoker or not. Part time to add dependent increases approximately 200% over single coverage + $15 surcharge for smoking. Full time increase for dependent is approximately 125% +We do not allow spouses with coverage through his/her employer to be on our plan.
