  2. Co-ordinator‘s report

  3. What has happened? Commission: New officer since Nov 2006: Anastasios Kentarchos Science: Advection experiments Consolidation of data & models Cross-cutting workshops Projects: NitroEurope since Feb 06 CarboAfrica ICOS

  4. What has happened? Administration: The team of the CarboEurope office • Annette Freibauer: overview, strategic decisions, workplan, policy relations • Angelika Thuille: day-to-day management • Yvonne Hofmann: secretary, webpage

  5. What has happened? Conferences • CarboEurope session at EGU • CarboSchool presentations at EGU and Kentucky, USA Cross-cutting Workshops • Chiotto (Vermeulen), Amsterdam, March 2006 • Croplands/grasslands (Tenhunen/Smith/Soussana), Bayreuth, May 2006 • Wetlands (Choijnicki), Poznan, June 2006 • others

  6. The Science Review by the Commission Reviewers • Phil Ineson • Timo Karijalainen Recommendations • Critical path analysis • Better integration between components • Systematic approach to uncertainties

  7. Example of the very detailed review “ • The following delays/deviations are noted but are not really raised as major concerns at this stage (but see above). • There are sometimes delays in data delivery. On the other hand, there have been also requests from outside the consortium to provide data in the datasets. • Workpackage 1.1. has delays in some deliverables 1.1.4, 1.1.5, 1.1.6 and thereby also in related milestones. • Workpackage 1.3. has delays in deliverables 1.3.1 and 1.3.3 and in related milestone. • Workpackage 1.4 has delays in deliverables 1.4.1, 1.4.2, and milestones 4, 5, 6 and 7. …”

  8. Tasks 2007 Task forces: integration between components Progress towards key objectives Synthesis by main PIs

  9. Future: Towards FP7 ICOS SEC plus some project leaders will have to meet in December/January to cast a paper about the future view of CarboEurope-IP-2 Press event in first half of 2007

  10. Future: What is expected in 2007? • Ecosystems: Continuation and optimization of ecosystem CO2 flux network, first synthesis of major ecosystem types and of the soil sampling project • Atmosphere: Multiple gas species attribution to the European C balance and controlling processes, high frequency aircraft profiles • Regional experiment: 2007 campaign • Integration: • First assessment of upscaling techniques from point flux measurements to Eurogrid • Proceedings in Biogeoscience • Initiatives for further Nature/Science papers!

  11. The Future • Will we close the gap between bottom-up and top-down approaches? • Will we get a handle on the uncertainty of NEE? • Will we incorporate management in ecosystem models? • Can we reward the maintenance of C-stocks?

  12. Main Events 2007 • NitroEurope annual meeting, Paestum, Italy, 5-9 Feb 2007 • Fluxnet Workshop, Italy, Feb 2007 • EGU General Assembly, Vienna, Austria, 15–20 April07 • Next CarboEurope annual meeting: October • Poland, Poznan, October 2007!!! • Czech Republic, Prague • France, ???
