The problem Myths, perceptions and poor reporting of fishing and aquaculture industry are not based on science or fact – eg: • The whole world, including Australia, is running out of seafood • The seas are overfished and the seafood industry is unsustainable • The aquaculture industry pollutes and damages natural environments • We need more marine protected areas • Fish are not treated ethically, fishing for fun is not ethical • Dugongs and turtles need protection WRONG The assessment The survival of the seafood and recreational fishing industry is at a critical point, with the very real prospect that it will not be viable in the foreseeable future.

Changing environment Enabling marketing by statutory Research and Development Corporations The government accepts this recommendation and will amend the PIERD Act to allow statutory RDCsto undertake marketing, where the relevant industry requests this and agrees to raise a marketing levy.
National Fishery Status Report • Single consolidated national report – one stop shop • Consistent status classification • Focusing specifically on individual biological stocks • 50 species (and subspecies) selected • ~80% Australian GVPand ~70% of the total catch • When will it be complete? • published in September/October-2012 • Future editions may include more information on: • environmental impact • economics • social issues • http://www.fish.gov.au
