  2. At the close of this session you will… • Define 4 key terms and 4 theorists about classroom management • Suggest 2 effective ways to diffuse a behavior problem in the classroom • Identify two strategies to link home and school and discuss why you will use these strategies

  3. Good Classroom Management Advice • Structure environment for student access (or limits) • Move around the classroom and maintain eye contact with your students • Pace and structure your lessons • Establish a quiet signal or routine • Maintain an interruption-free place to work • Offer positive reinforcement for each student’s efforts • Provide balance of independent, partner, group and whole group activities • Offer more time for student talk than teacher talk

  4. Specific classroom management models • Canter’s “Assertive Discipline” • Glasser’s “Control Theory” • Kounin’s “With-it-ness” • Hunter’s “Direct Instruction” • and remember Skinner, Vygotsky, and Pavlov

  5. Parents send the best kids they have…what if they act up?! • Ignore negative; highlight strengths • Cueing, signals • Talk privately • Teach self-regulation strategies • Use effective behaviorist approaches • Talk with parents • Consider cultural and learning differences
