Introduction to ArcView GIS • What is unique about ArcView GIS? GUI Desktop Use Database Access Customization & Programming Extensions to Increase Functionality
Introduction to ArcView GIS • GUI Unlike other GIS software applications (of the past), ArcView uses a graphical user interface (GUI). Instead of typed commands, menus, buttons, and tools are used. The GUI provides access to most control, functionality, and operations. Each document type in ArcView has its own GUI controls. Beware: The ArcView GUI is complicated and many-layered. Much time and practice is needed to master the ArcView GUI. There is no command-line control; all automation must be scripted.
Introduction to ArcView GIS • Desktop Use Unlike GIS software of the past, ArcView will run on a desktop computer. Desktop computers (PCs) are: cheap easy to administer ubiquitous easy to use
Introduction to ArcView GIS • Database Access Data stored in separate database applications are available in ArcView. Many data sets exist in separate databases that describe spatial data.
Introduction to ArcView GIS • Customization & Programming Many functions are not available from the GUI. Custom functions and operations can be created with the Avenue programming language. Repetitive tasks can be automated. New functions and operations can be added to the GUI menus, buttons, and tools. Beware: Scripting is not extremely easy to learn.
Introduction to ArcView GIS • Extensions to Increase Functionality Functionality not included in the core ArcView product can increase productivity. Some extensions are built-in, but just need to be enabled. Other extensions are available for free; some are available for sale. We will be using several extensions during the course.
