  3. A Resume • The first meeting between you and the employer • Tells a great deal about you • Get you to the interview • Calling card, so remember that “First impressions are lasting ones.”

  4. Can Your Resume Pass The 10-second Test? • 10 seconds is all the time an employer is going to give your resume in deciding to keep it or pass on it!

  5. Resume Rules • No typographical or grammatical errors • Do not lie or exaggerate • Focus on strengths and accomplishments • Use 8 ½ by 11 inch white bond paper • Neat in black legible font • Written in past tense: i.e “parked cars, provided babysitting service, etc.

Resume Rules • The page should look balanced • Format must be pleasing to the eye • Use NO abbreviations – spell out states, universities, organizations, etc. • Be sure it fits all on one page • Edit out unnecessary words – Outline “bullet point” format • Be sure your resume represents you in the best light possible

Resume Content • Identification information • Job objective –start with “To”: “To earn a bachelors degree in teaching Elementary Ed” • Education • Achievements • Work experience – duties or responsibilities • Related or volunteer experience • Extra curricular activities (memberships/affiliations) • Skills (computer/languages/CPR/teamwork) • Interests

  8. ORDER of Resume • ALWAYS LIST YOUR OBJECTIVE and EDUCATION FIRST • Chronological • Most common • Listing your jobs and experience with the most recent mentioned first (Reverse Chronological) • Resume type most preferred by employers

Resume Project steps • Gather personal information by completing the yellow resume outline • Format your resume outline based on the “formatting your resume” instructions • USE past tense ACTION VERBS to describe work or related experiences • Only bullet points, no sentences • Check resume master with blue resume rubric • Print resume and attach to rubric for grading

Some people prefer to put “References available upon request”
