National Obesity Trends • Childhood overweight rates have tripled since 1980. • 1 in 3 adults are obese. • Obesity rates are rising or remaining constant in all states.
Michigan Obesity Trends • 26.8% of Michigan’s adults are obese, making it the 9th most obese state in the nation • 14.5% of youth (ages 10-17) are overweight or obese • In 2003 $291 per capita was spent on the medical cost of obesity in Michigan • The US Census estimates Michigan’s population to • have been 10,078,146 in 2003 • $291 x 10,078,146 = $2,932,740,486
Pertinent Information Rural Americans more likely to be obese than urban Americans Rural children are more likely to be overweight or obese: Lutfiyya et al, Obesity, 2007 Rural adults are more likely to be obese: Patterson et al, The Journal of Rural Health, 2004 School Wellness Policies According to the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, all school districts with federally funded lunch programs were required to have developed and implemented school wellness policies by the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year. Faith Based Organizations offer health services A survey of more than 6,000 American congregations by the National Council of Churches and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows that over 70% of churches provide direct health services.
