Butternut What to look for…. Fewer leaflets than black walnut The seed is oblong Has a chocolate colored pith Leaf is wider than black walnut
The red oak group.. • All acorns mature in two years. • Have lobed leaves with bristle tips. • Wood pores are open.
Black oak What to look for: Usually 7 lobed leaves Upper leaf surface is glossy green Has a gray colorede bud Acorn is ½ to ¾ “, cap has a shingled roof like a pigmy hut Yellow inner bark
Red oak Identifying characteristics: 7-9 Lobed leaves Has a red / brown bud Seed is a fat 1” acorn with a shallow cap
Pin oak What to know….. 5-7 lobes Lobes cut almost to center of leaf Lower lobes look like shelves Seed is ½” acorn Found in low wet areas along with sweetgum tree Keep lower branches for a long time
Shingle oak What to learn about me…. Oblong and entire leaves Have a short petiole Leaves wrinkle when dried Found in wet places Small ½” acorn Hang onto leaves into late winter
Pignut hickory What to look for: Usually five leaflets Leaf much smaller than shagbark hickory Small twigs and buds Seed is round Seed has a thin husk covering it Mostly a tree found in southern Indiana
Shagbark hickory Identifying characteristics: 5 leaflets Top three leaflets much larger than bottom two Seed is a four ribbed nut, has a thick husk that breaks into 4 sections People eat this hickory Has shaggy bark that peels off in strips
Bitternut hickory What you need to know… 5-11 leaflets Leaflets longer than wide Bottom leaflets often curve backwards Seed is round, thin husk Has sulfur yellow buds
