    1. Pronouns A pronoun is a word that is used in place of one or more nouns. SPI 0601.1.1 Identify the correct use of nouns (i.e., common/proper, singular/plural, possessives) and pronouns (i.e., agreement, subject, object) within context.

    2. Example Yikes Ezra gave Nathan Ezra’s shotgun with the shotgun’s double barrel. Much Better Ezra gave Nathan his shotgun with its double barrel.

    3. Examples Yikes Molly prepared a large recipe of Molly’s favorite stew to give to Molly’s father when Molly’s father was ill. Much Better Molly prepared a large recipe of her favorite stew to give to her father when he was ill.

    5. Agreement When a pronoun replaces a noun, it must be just like the noun it replaces in the following ways: Gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter) Number (singular or plural) Person (first, second, or third) Case (subject, object, or possessive)

    16. First Person In the first-person point of view one character tells the story. This character reveals only personal thoughts and feelings of what s/he sees. The writer uses pronouns such as "I“, "me“, “mine”, or "my". Example: I woke up this morning feeling terrific. I hopped out of bed excited to start the new day. I knew that today was the day my big surprise would come.

    17. Second Person With the second-person point of view the narrator tells the story using the pronoun "you".  The character is someone similar to you. Example: You wake up feeling really terrific. Then you hop out of bed excited to start the new day. You know that today is the day that your big surprise will come. This is rarely used in literature. It can be seen in Choose Your Own Adventure books.

    18. Third person The third-person point of view is the most commonly used in fiction. When writing in the third-person you will use pronouns such as "he", "she", or "it". Example: Brian woke up feeling terrific. He hopped out of bed excited to start the new day. He knew that today was the day that his big surprise would come.

    24. Case (subject, object, or possessive) The case of a personal pronoun shows you that the pronoun is a subject pronoun, object pronoun, or a possessive pronoun. Each of these pronouns works differently in a sentence, so each one has a different form.

    29. Subject Pronouns Subject Pronouns - I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they function as the subject of a sentence: They went hunting. He shot the turkey. It will make a great dinner.

    31. Subject Pronouns Replace each underlined word or words in each sentence with a pronoun. Job and Nathan charged wildly through the forest. (1)Job and Nathan headed in what Nathan could only hope was the direction of Ezra’s place. (1) Nathan didn’t care right at first which way Job and he were going. (3)Nathan only cared about putting distance between Weasel and himself. It seemed like Job felt the same way.

    32. Object Pronouns Object Pronouns - me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them serve as the object of a verb. Give me the bullet. He told you to come tonight. She asked him to help. They visited her when they came to Ohio.

    33. Object Pronouns Objective Pronouns may be the object of the preposition or receive the action of the verb: Nathan and Ezra went hunting for her. Please don’t leave without him. Ezra sold them a set of arrows. Take it and run.

    35. Possessive Pronouns Possessive Pronouns - mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs, and whose show that something belongs to someone. That medicine bag is hers. His mother lives down in town.

    36. Possessive Pronouns Possessive Pronouns show ownership. That gun is mine. Is the coat on the nail yours? Are those piglets ours? Your locket is on a leather cord.

    37. Note None of the possessive pronouns are spelled with an apostrophe.
