George Orwell • His full name was Eric Arthur Blair • Born June 25, 1903 • Died January 21, 1950 • He was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic.
Theme • Peer pressure can make you do some crazy things.
Plot • The man did not fit in with the Burmese or the British people. An elephant was loose in the town and the people wanted him to kill it, so they pressured him into killing the elephant.
Characters/Speakers • Police: hated by the Burmese and British people. • The crowd: makes itself known through laughter, the cackling that accompanies the petty acts of revenge which the Burmese inflict on their foreign rulers. • The elephant: a rogue who has escaped.
Conflict • He was told to kill the elephant but didn’t really want to, but if he didn’t he wouldn’t have been accepted by the Burmese.
Resolution • He kills the elephant hoping that he will be accepted by the Burmese.
Memorable line • “When I pulled the trigger I did not hear the bang or feel the kick – one never does when a shot goes home – but I heard the devilish roar of glee the went up from the crowd.” • He felt accepted by the crowd when he heard them cheering because he shot the elephant.
Questions • Do you think he did the right thing by shooting the elephant? • Why shouldn’t you give in to peer pressure? • What else could they have done to get rid of the elephant?
