Urban forests and Green The social and ecological values of “greening” brownfield sites in the Ruhr Area I Renate Spaeth, MUNLV NRW, October 2008
The Ruhr Area: trends of structural changes Decline of ‘old industries’ leads to: 1. Socio-economic effects (e. g. high unemployment rates, declines of local tax income, depreciation, less retail) 2. Demographic effects (e. g. shrinking population, migration, concentration of disadvantaged population groups like migrants) 3. Urbanistic effects (e. g. perforation of urban landscape, loss of quality in local infrastructure)
Come comincia:: La Expo Internationale (IBA) Emscherpark • Una vecchia regione industriale cambia su faccia: La Expo Internationale IBA Emscherpark 1989-1999 aiuta.
Conceptual framework for the post-industrial urban landscape 1: wild forest areas • The areas left by industry are situated within the city, their size ranging between 10 and 200 ha • These areas are or will be accessible after decades of having been „forbidden land“ for the city dwellers • They will not be managed in a way forests are managed, there will be neither inventories nor biotop management plans nor nature conservation areas • Whoever wants to go there and use them is free to do so • Land art is in some cases one way to „translate“ historical use and future options • There is and will be research done about the development of the areas and about the use of and the perception towards the „new forest type“
The forest station – a former colliery building Foresters are working at this station as a ranger
Wild urban forests as green classrooms A research done by the universities of Dortmund and Bochum, Institutes of Geography and Didactics • We offer primary schools and pre-schools the use of the wild urban forests • We encourage the schools to develop concepts that suit the childrens daily lifes and experience • We prefer small groups to be able to concentrate on each individual child • We take special care of children with certain disabilities • We concentrate on social competence • To be outside for children is experiencing freedom

shrinking and wastelands Wilderness vs. recultivation Wilderness is a strong idea – in times of economic growth Wilderness gives a contrast – under the conditions of urban density Wilderness is different to everyday life – if you have a regular job Recultivation – establishes new forms of landuse Recultivation – shows that someone cares for the land and the neighbourhood Recultivation - turns wastelands into a public space
Conceptual framework for the post-industrial urban landscape 2: biomass landscape laboratory
The future: Conceptual framework phase 2Biomass Laboratory at the mining area HUGO, Gelsenkirchen (25 hectare)
Wild and planted urban forest areas have a variety of important functions for people and nature There are some projects going on and yet to come: Within the scheme of Network Emscher Park urban Forestry and in preparation of the Ruhr Area being Europe`s Capitel of culture In 2010; Forests and (land) arts; intercultural dialogues on nature and forests; intergenerational forests, NeighbourWoods for deprived Neighbourhoods; forests for health
