  6. Connectivity • Fibre optic LAN at OUT HQ • Satellite or microwave • Costly bandwidth – 256/128 kbps – 2,000 USD per month • ESSAY – Submarine Cable

  7. The Content • Distance Mode Learning • 500 titles of study material written • 120 available in electronic form • New electronic materials being designed • Support from AVU in Science and Math

  8. MIT-OCW in a Box • Ready electronic material • Freely usable • 1800 courses over a wide range • Distributed as a mirror site • Many centres in the developing world • Accessible fast on LAN • Recently installed at OUT HQ LAN

  9. Performance of the MIT-OCW • Monthly hits of 9,000 • Compare maximum 7,000 elsewhere

  10. Performance of the MIT-OCW • Initial survey done • 2/3 of users - students • Fast speed reduced frustrations • New and complementary material • Difficult to search - courses differently configured • Faculty can guide students – create a software interface?

  11. Way Forward • Convert our own study materials into electronic format • Next Access in Regional Centres • TIX – Tanzania Internet Exchange • Mobile Learning • Open Source Online University – OSOU necessary
