So What Did We Do? • Last lesson, we completed a few different reactions. Below is the reaction from Friday. • Step 1 - Mg (s) +2 HCl (aq) MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g) • Step 2 –2 Mg (aq) + O2 (g) 2MgO (s) • Step 3 – Fe (s) + O2 (g) Fe2O3 (s)
Questions • Using this PPT and the PPT from Friday 17th of Feb – write down which type of reaction each step consists of. • In the Magnesium sample, what was the main color of the solid? • Why was there not much red color in the magnesium sample but plenty in the iron nail sample?
Displacement Reactions • Today – we will complete a simple displacement reaction. It’s where we have a not very reactive metal (Copper) which is replaced but a lesser reactive metal (Silver) • As Copper is more reactive, it will become aqueous and replace the Silver.
Decomposition • Silver Nitrate is an interesting chemical. It’s being used as our experiment today. • When left in sunlight – the following equation occurs • AgNO3 (aq) Ag+ (aq) + NO3- (aq) • Note how it has been broken down into simpler ingredients – we will see this over a week or so
Small Experiment • In groups of 2 or 3 you will need: • A chopstick or pen • Roughly 20cm of Copper Wire • Test Tube & Silver Nitrate • Rubber Stopper • Wrap the Copper Wire like shown by the teacher. Then add Silver Nitrate into the test tube. Close with a Rubber stopper as shown. • Be careful with Silver Nitrate as it stains your skin!
