  2. Outcome • Co-Chairs’ Joint Statement (A/63/79) • Non-negotiated summary of the discussions • Concluding remarks by the Co-Chairs • Transmitted to the President of the General Assembly

  3. Mandate • General Assembly resolution 61/222, para.91 • Environmental impacts of anthropogenic activities • Coordination and cooperation among States as well as relevant intergovernmental organizations and bodies • Role of area-based management tools • Genetic resources • Whether there is a governance gap and, if so, how it should be addressed

General Considerations • Urgent need to address the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity BNJ • Some progress made since 2006 (e.g. GA resolution and FAO, CBD and ISA work), but further efforts needed • All issues related to oceans are interrelated and should be addressed in an interdisciplinary, intersectoral and comprehensive manner • UNCLOS sets out the legal framework for all activities in the oceans and seas and is complemented by a number of other conventions and instruments • Science has an essential role and further scientific research is needed • There is a need for increased capacity-building for developing States

Co-Chairs’ Concluding Remarks • Need for ongoing consideration by the General Assembly of these issues, in particular within the framework of the Working Group • The Working Group could consider: • More effective implementation and enforcement of existing instruments • Strengthening of cooperation and coordination at all levels and across all sectors, including enhanced cooperation in capacity-building for developing countries

Co-Chairs’ Concluding Remarks (contd.) • The Working Group could consider: • Development and use of area-based management tools, including designation, management, monitoring and enforcement, consistent with UNCLOS • Practical measures to address the conservation and sustainable use of marine genetic resources ABNJ, without prejudice to on-going discussions on the relevant legal regime on marine genetic resources ABNJ • Continuing and enhanced marine scientific research in relation to marine biodiversity ABNJ
