Introduction to the Science Process Scientist follow specific procedures during experiments. Scientist question, model, and investigate. They design, explain, measure and record utilizing data management involving math.
A Scientist like yourself uses the SCIENTIFIC METHOD to work in a series of organized steps that scientist use as a guide for solving a problem or answering a question. Key Words: hypothesis, dependent variable, independent variable, control group, experimental group
HYPOTHESIS • An explanation for an observation or phenomenon. A hypothesis is used to make a testable prediction. • When making a statement it is written in the If______, then what statement.
Experimentation • A scientist will outline the method of experimentation PROCEDURALLY. • For Example: • Placer beaker on the counter and add water. • Measure out 30mL of water from the beaker using funnel and graduated cylinder.
Why would a scientist be disappointed with the results of an experiment? Discussion
Variables Dependent Variable- A dependent variable is the variable being tested in a scientific experiment. Independent Variable- An independent variable is the variable that is manipulated in the experiment.
Variables Example A scientist is testing the effect of light and dark on the behavior of moths by turning a light on and off. The independent variable is the amount of light and the moth’s reaction is the dependent variable. A change in the independent variable (amount of light) directly causes a change in the dependent variable (moth’s behavior).
Groups • The CONTROL GROUP: Standard set-up in which all variables are controlled and to which the experimental results are composed. • The EXPERIMENTAL GROUP: Identical to the control group except for a change in the independent variable.
Record Data Qualitative Quantitative Deals with numbers. Data which can be measured. Length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time, temperature, sound levels, etc. • Deals with descriptions. • Data can be observed but not measured. • Colors, textures, smells, tastes, appearance, beauty, etc.
Conclusion Does the evidence and data support your hypothesis? A scientist will utilize the data and evidence to either reject or accept the hypothesis.
