Who did we survey? • Rowan students • Ages varying from 18 and older
Perception of TobaccoSmoking vs Smokeless • Which is more harmful?
Chew/Snus • Only 5 male respondents reported using smokeless tobacco • Reasons for preference: • Less harmful on lungs (athletes) • Convenience (Indoor use)
Smokers • 11 of the people surveyed were users • 3 attempted to quit • 5 previous smokers/quitters
Reported Side Effects • Shortness of breath - 13 • Increased HR - 4 • Yellowing of Teeth - 6 • Bad Breath – 5 • Yellow fingernails – 1 • Reduced Appetite – 5 • Chronic Cough - 5
Conclusions/Comparisons • 16% of surveyed used tobacco • The CDC reported that in 2010 19.3% of adults in the U.S use tobacco • 5% of surveyed used smokeless tobacco • The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 5.4% of college students ages 18-25 use smokeless tobacco
Conclusions/Comparisons • Campus averages were very close to national averages • Smoking is viewed negatively across the board • Side effects were very commonly reported from most users
