What is a Remix • A remix is a song that has been edited or completely recreated to sound different from the original version. • Common reasons for remixing:- Adapt or revise it for different purposes eg. radio or nightclub play- Alter a song for artistic purposes or to improve it- Suit a specific music genre / reach a different audience- Provide additional versions as bonus or b-side tracks- Create a connection between a smaller artist and a successful one

  4. Creating remix material for others • Export all tracks separately and- do not use dittering- use theproper sample rate- avoid too many effects / compression • Export MIDI • Add legal information

  7. What are Stems and MIDI files? • Stems are the individual audio tracks. So you have Vocals, Drums and other instruments separately. • MIDI files contain the notes played with the instruments. Having MIDI data allows you to use another instrument for the same melody. Usually it helps to figure out the Key.

  8. Where can we get Stems? • Directly from the Producer or Artist • Remix Contests (eg. RemixComps.com) • Some albums ship with stems • 5 min. Group question:Do you know other sources?

Remixing without stems • Usually more difficult • Expect limited possibilities • Using the EQ helps you tocut out frequencies youwant to replace with a new instrument. - Picture: cutting out the bass. • You can try to filter out instruments using inverted sound does not always work well. But it’s worth a try. Google for “Vocal Isolation Audacity” to learn the techniques. • Some DAWs can recognize MIDI notes which you can use. • Replaying instruments by ear or score (if you have).

  10. How to integrate the material • You can place and cut the audiodirectly in the Arrangement. • You can fire samples using a sampler.

  11. Mess with the material as needed • You can adjust the timing by speeding up or slowing down and/or time stretching. • You can duplicate parts. • You can cut pieces out. • You can use effects to fill gaps.

  12. Add other parts • You can use your own material. • You can use 3rd party material. - If you use material created by others, don’t forget about the legal aspects. • You can rearrange and tweak the any material, so that it is something new.
