  2. Definition: A period of time where one does not use any electronic devices such as smartphones or laptops in order to reduce stress and connect back with the physical world. (1) DIGITAL DETOX

  3. THE REALITY OF TODAY'S ELECTRONICS

  4. Almost half of North Americans have their phones within reach for 90 - 100% of the day. (8) PHONES North Americans check phones over 150 times per day. (8)

  5. 78% of U.S Adults under the age of 30 own a laptop or desk top. (9) COMPUTERS

  6. 53% of North American adults own a tablet (Highest in the world). (10) TABLETS Children can navigate a tablet before they can tie their shoes. (10)

  7. 7/10 use Social Media. (11) SOCIAL MEDIA 222 million North Americans use Facebook. (11)

  8. NOMOPHOBIA Definition: The anxiety of being without your phone. (12)

  9. DOES THIS CONSTANT CONSUMPTION DO ANY HARM? Yes, study's have shown that mental health is strongly impacted by our digital devices but one study by UK Psychologists found that depression was common with self-identified "internet addicts" (13). It explains that Facebook is a large part of this, giving some feelings of alienation and loneliness (14).

HOW TO UNPLUG Find your reason for why you're doing the detox Plan it out: Invite friends over, book a yoga classes, pick out your favourite book... etc. Resist the temptation and put the electronics away Get an alarm and a watch (other than your phone) Do not "retox": don't get overwhelmed, ease back into your emails and notifications and keep in mind everything you felt during the detox (7)

  15. 2 Improved Sleep Neuroscientist believe that the blue light from our phones, suppress melatonin in the body causing one to be more alert and having a lower quality of sleep. (3)

  16. 3 Longer Attention Span Due to the increase of electronics, the average attention span has dropped by 4% now shorter than a goldfish. (4)

  17. Strengthened Memory 4 In using technology our brains have been trained to skip over insignificant details but a detox one will remember more obscure details of one another. (5)
