  2. Media Rules • Media is any means of sharing information with many people at once. New technology has led to the growth of many new forms of media, with the Internet being the newest. • Technology allows us to do things more easily and faster. That means employees can do their jobs more easily, saving time and money. • There are unwritten rules when it comes to media use that tell you how to use media in a polite, respectful way. • We will cover the following topics: • Cell Phone Rules • Email Rules • Laptop and Tablet Rules • Internet Use • Internet Safety • Video Conferencing Rules • Social Media Use

  3. 1. Cell Phone Rules • Each employer has its own set of rules for cell phone use at work. Its important that you know and follow your employer’s cell phone rules. • 5 guidelines to get you started: • Phone use during meetings • Checking messages • Personal phone calls • Consider those around you • Sending text messages

  4. 2. Email Rules • Electronic mail, or email, is one of the most common methods of communicating in the workplace. It’s convenient because it allows you to read and respond to the sender when you are ready. • Basic rules for using email in the workplace: • Use your work email for work • Respond quickly • Manage your inbox • Consider other ways to share information • Be professional

  5. 3. Laptop and Tablet Rules • Laptops and tablets are portable, meaning you can easily pack them up and carry them around. This allows you to take your work with you, so you can get work done anytime, anywhere. • Five rules for using laptops and tablets in the workplace: • Use appropriate during meetings • Keep your device virus free • Follow the policies of your employer • Use work devices for work • Take care of your laptop or tablet

  6. 4. Video Conferencing • Video conferencing is a way of using the Internet to communicate with other people. Video conferencing allows two or more people, in different locations, to have a live, face-to-face conversation. • Be sure to follow a few rules for video conferencing at work: • Get rid of distractions • Be professional • Have your phone ready • Talk to the person, not the computer • Act as if you’re with the person

Internet Rules • The internet allows people to send emails, chat with people in real time, and see the people they are talking to, even if they are miles away. • The internet offers many distractions from work that can cause you to get off track and waste time that should be spent working. It is important that you follow the rules when using the internet at work. • Rules for Internet use at work: • Search the web with a purpose • Instant messaging rules • Internet efficiency • Limit your time online

  8. 6. Internet Safety • The internet allows users to hide their true identity, or lie about who they really are. This allows people to lie in order to get information and use it for illegal or inappropriate activity. • Practice the following safety tips to help reduce your chances of running into Internet predators: • Handling threatening emails • Sharing information • Searching the internet carefully • Protecting personal information

  9. 7. Social Media • Social media allows you to share information with friends, family and anyone else who might be looking for you online. It also makes it easier for businesses to reach potential customers.
