  3. Purpose of this training • To introduce users to the new campus-wide reporting tool-Cognos Suite • To acquaint users with the “look and feel” of Cognos • To show users how to create simple reports in Query Studio.

  4. What is not covered in this Training: • This training is designed to familiarize you with the Cognos reporting tool. This session will explore Query Studio • It is not designed to familiarize you with the underlying data in ODS/EDW system • How to interpret the content of the reports/ Functionality of the reports.

  5. What is Cognos? • Web Based Reporting Tool-Zero foot print( has a few client based components like Office plug-in) • Allows user to create, modify, and distribute reports to user community. • Allows user to schedule and burst reports • We are licensed to run a few Cognos products of which these will be heavily used based on the User Role: • Query Studio – allow you to create simple list reports, for casual or novice users • Report Studio – allows you to create more complex reports (prompts, advanced formatting, advanced charting, etc) • Analysis Studio- multi dimensional analysis. • Interfaces with the ODS/EDW system

  7. Access to Cognos Portal: • Cognos has dual environments at Villanova: Test : http://cognosqa.villanova.edu/cognos10/ Production: http://cognop.villanova.edu/cognos10/ • To log in use Domain Account id and password to log in.

  8. Demo • Quick exploration of Query Studio and ( time permitting-Report Studio)

  10. Toolbar contains most commonly used functions • Main menu contains menu options and all functions

  11. Insert Data • Select data from package Edit Data • Change display of query items Change Layout • Edit properties of your report Run Report • Processing or preview data • Export data in various formats Manage File • Create and save report and view a report definition

  12. Package - A logical collection of data tables

  13. Query Subject - A single table that holds multiple Query Items • Query Item - A field in the Query Subject table (Entity UID, ID, Name, etc.) • Measure – Quantitative data such as revenue or quantity

  14. Insert • Single-click a query item and click the Insert button • Double-click a query item • Click and drag a query item • Click and drag a query subject to add all of its query items CTRL+Click to select multiple items

  15. Meet the Undo Button!!! • Undo the last several things you’ve done • Redo available

  16. Data Element Dictionary • Helpful resource available to users • Structure mirrors data package hierarchy • Data Packages = highest level of data organization • Query Subjects (equivalent to database table) • Query Items (equivalent to database field)

  17. Note about today’s session: • After you complete the exercises in this training material, you should be able to: • Create a report • Add data to the report • Save the report • Run the report • View the report • Recognize the types of reports
