Reading in First Grade • We work in whole group, small group, independently, in a reading workshop, and one-on-one with a teacher. We will learn through interactive read alouds, shared reading, and guided reading groups. Language arts is a large component of our class. First grade is a year for your child to blossom as a reader and writer. • Students will be put in reading groups based on their performance on the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS). Students take the DRA in September, January, and April. PALS is given at the beginning and end of the year. • More information regarding “book baggies” will be sent home in October. Please visit my website for more information about helping your child with reading.
Writing in First Grade • We will be working as a whole group, small group, and in individual conferences to help your child with their writing skills. • We will be learning many different writing genres and at times we will integrate our social studies and science units into our writing. • We will follow the writing process of drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. • The students will be writing in D’Nealian form and will also be working on letter formation using a handwriting book.
Word Study in First Grade • Word Study is studied in small groups based on students’ performance on the Developmental Spelling Assessment (DSA) which is given 3 times throughout the year. • Each week your child will study a list of words based on the developmental level they are working on in spelling. They will have homework based on their word study list. • Your child may change groups based on their phonological development throughout the year and their results on the DSA. Don’t panic if you see easier words coming home in the beginning when we are working on HOW to sort words and carry out specific tasks.
