PIENAP “The Slovak National Natural Reserve in Pieniny was the first International Landscape Park in Europe.“ • founded on January 16th, 1967 • the area of the park is 21,25 km2 • Mountains are characteristic with a very complicated geologic structure. • The most attractive for tourists is rafting in 9 km long Dunajec Canyon • After taking a raft, you can: • 1. hike back alongthe Dunajec river • 2. take a bus from Lesnica
A museum of Red Monastery • Between 1320 - 1563 it was a Cartesian monastery • monks needed a calm place in order to practise meditations and ascetic way of life • in 1711 - 1782 the Red Monastery became a Camaldulsian monastery • Monks kept bees, gathered healing plants and looked after ill people
Three Crowns • The highest (982 m) and also the most interesting peak in the Pieniny Mountains. • It is situated in the Polish part of Pieniny • On the top, there is a view gallery for 15 people. • On the busy days, when too many people want to climb up to the top, you would be allowed to stay there only about 10 minutes.
Dunajec and rafts • Dunajec is the only river that takes waters from the Slovak territory to the Baltic Sea • Flowing further away Dunajec created a romantic ravine in the limestone reefs, known as Prielom Dunajca • 3,6 km2 of the Dunajec Canyon area is a protected National Natural Reserve • It is a very interesting area especially by its flora and a picturesque landscape • You can hike through the Dunajec Canyon following the tourist trail with 10 informative (explanatory) tables
Haligovske skaly • It is a protected natural monument situated at the territory of the Pieniny National Park • There are many groups of stone towers such as (Biela, Červená, Sovia, Končistá, Hrubá) • There you can find lots of cavities, hollows and caves • The most famous is the cave Aksamitka in the Červená skala • The caves were known to the local population already in the early Middle-Ages.
