New Rating System Judges Makes Of Cars Most Vulnerable To Car Theft Are you looking to buy a new car and you would like advice on which make is more vulnerable to car thieves? There is a brand-new safety rating system which reportedly can point you in the right direction. It has been developed to highlight which model may be most at risk from insecure keyless entry or ignition systems. They will be judged on their vulnerability to thieves, where cars will be ranked from unacceptable and poor to basic and good, all the way to superior.
A leading security expert named Thatcham Research has brought out the new rating system. An independent, non-profit body which has been testing car security since the nineties. The research centre was first set up by the car insurance industry in the late sixties, to keep up security standards and decrease how much we spend on motor insurance claims. Its research is now at the centre of car safety and repair and checks the security of all new cars brought out in Britain. So far this year it has tested eleven vehicles, where half a dozen have been rated “poor”, such as the Porsche Macan, Hyundai Nexo, Kia Proceed and the Ford Mondeo. Thatcham Research believes, of all the cars they tested using their brand-new rating system, the model most at risk from car thieves, ranked “unacceptable” was the Suzuki Jimmy.
At the other end of the spectrum, those cars ranked “superior” ranged from the Mercedes B- Class, the Jaguar XE, the Range Rover Evoque and the Audi E-tron. Their keyless entry or start systems have been found to utilise the most secure wireless technology, leading to their high rating. It is felt a vehicle with a keyless entry or start system leaving it open to car theft will be immediately ranked “poor”. However, the new ranking system has not been without controversy or criticism. Many in the car security industry have questioned some of the rulings, as well as feeling the new rating system may be complicating security problems rather than making them simpler. Others have issues with what has been called its blanket method of dealing with car security.
