Workshop Objectives • Participants will demonstrate the proper use of two tools used to help motivate behavior change. • Participants will describe two strategies found to be effective with recruitment and retention of clients in HIV prevention, treatment and care services.

Principles of MI • 1: Express empathy. • 2: Develop discrepancy. • 3: Roll with resistance. • 4: Support self-efficacy
AssessImportance & Confidence Importance – this allows the client to express how compelling the need for this behavior change is to them at the present moment. On a scale of 1 – 9, with 1 being not at all important and 9 being very important, please place an “X” in the box that represents how important it is for you to: Access HIV care and treatment services
Importance High • Explore why client feels importance • Support and validate • Allow client to identify significant others for support • Identify needs to make change happen Low • Explore perception of risk/severity • Identify how beliefs were developed (culture, peers, etc.) • Use scaling question • Educate and correct misinformation
Assess Importance & Confidence Importance – this allows the client to express how compelling the need for this behavior change is to them at the present moment. On a scale of 1 – 9, with 1 being not at al; confident and 9 being very confident, please place an “X” in the box that represents how confident you are that you could: Access HIV care and treatment services
Confidence High • Explore why client feels low confidence • Explore past attempts and outcomes • Identify barriers • Use scaling question • Provide genuine support Low • Explore how client is able to feel confidence • Identify needs to make change happen • Develop plan for action • Provide support
Social Network Strategy • HIV-positive and high risk HIV-negative persons are enlisted to identify persons from their social, sexual, and drug using networks who may be at risk for contracting HIV. • Recruiters refer the social, sexual and drug using members of their social network to HIV counseling and testing services. • Those who are HIV-positive, or at very high risk for becoming HIV-positive, are referred to appropriate medical care and prevention services.
HIV Navigation Services • Service to help a person obtain timely, essential and appropriate HIV-related medical and social services to optimize his or her health and prevent HIV transmission and acquisition. • Includes linking persons to health care systems, assisting with health insurance and transportation, identifying and reducing barriers to care, and tailoring health education to the client to influence his or her health-related attitudes and behaviors. • Often uses peers or paraprofessionals for service delivery
