  1. CCRP GIS Support Project Activities Overview • Objectives • Present update on activities and spatial data collection for • the benefit of cross pollination and • to reiterate our support offer to the Andes Region • Discuss opportunities to work together • Offer to share resources created by the GISsupport project

  2. Overall Objectives of the CCRP GIS Support Project • Making relevant spatial data more easily accessible • Data collection + processing (suitable collections and data formats) • Improving data accessibility • Raise awareness of suitable data sets • Helping CCRP researchers to be more spatially proficient • and efficient with their research • Determine where they work (and why here and not somewhere else) • Determine for which area their research is valid • Take into account local variability of physicaland socio-economic site characteristics

  3. Approach - How to accomplish the Overall Goals • Creating GIS tool, Data, and Resource Infrastructure • Communication • Capacity building researchers vs. GIS expert team e.g. Kenya GIS • Direct Project Support • Visualization in Desktop and Web Maps • Spatial Analysis { 

  4. Approach - How to accomplish the Overall Goals • Making data easily accessible • Improve data accessibility • Data collection + processing • Formats and suitable collections smaller areas with long time series e.g. CHIRPS data • How: creating Data Infrastructure • Capacity building • Communication + Resource Infrastructure • Project GIS exchange (Redmine Web Platform) • QGIS - Desktop templates • Tutorials – Case studies • Wiki Highlights of Desktop resources (in QGIS) • GIS Newsletter + CCRP support mailing lists • Workshops, Trainings, Conference calls, email exchanges + follow ups

  5. Approach - How to accomplish the Overall Goals • Visualization + Analysis • Direct Project Support • Via Capacity building • Web Maps • Simple Publication • QGIS WebServer, GitHUB GeoJSON or • QGIS to Leaflet/OpenLayers export • Custom Web maps • CCRP Where We Work Map • Project location editing • QGIS Desktop maps • Spatial Analysis

  6. Capacity building - GIS Workshops + Training • Web GIS workshopNairobi March 2015 • GIS support at RM WSOuagadougou April 2015 • GIS Work MeetingLilongwe September 2015 • Web GIS workshopNairobi Feb/March 2016 • RM WorkshopDar-Es-Salaam August 2016 • GIS Work MeetingLilongwe November 2016 • GIS Tool workshopNairobi March 2017

  7. Research Methods Workshop Participants

  8. Data work / accessebility • Data set collection - physical to socioeconomic • OSM extraction -> web directory • Global, Regional , Country wide, Project data

  9. GIS + Data Collection - downloadshttp://ccrpdata.terragis.net

  10. GIS + Data Collection • Desktop templates - downloads

  11. Data of Special Interest – Climate - Precipitation Data • CHIRPS - 5km resolution

  12. Data of Special Interest – Soil Grids - 17 Parameters • Soil grids – 250m resolution • Used for TZ Land use suitability • Tool- Maize

  13. GIS + Data Collection • data downloads • http://osmdata.terragis.net • Zipped data • by Country and Province

  14. Communication + Resource Infrastructure • Project GIS exchange (Redmine Web Platform)

  15. Communication + Resource Infrastructure Project GIS exchange • GIS news and tutorials

  16. Resource Infrastructure- Project GIS exchange • Workshop prerequisites example Web Mapping WS Nairobi 2016

  17. Visualization - Where we work • 120 Projects • 4 Regions • 12 Countries Examples of Projets: South African region

  18. Other CCRP Web GIS Resources • MapServer Project Locations Editing • Africa OSM viewer

  19. Visualization - Web maps: QGIS Desktop + Server • Publishing templates to Web GIS

  20. Visualization - Web maps: QGIS Desktop + Server • Lizmap: QGIS-Plugin + Viewer

  21. Desktop GIS tools • QGIS • Templates • Case Studies • R -Scripts

  22. Approach to teach OS GIS Case studies and map templates

  23. Location Maps - Soils • SW Kenya – Multi Purpose Legumes

  24. Location Maps

  25. Location Maps - Topography

  26. Location Maps – Land Cover

  27. Spatial Analysis • Agro-Ecological Intensification • Which villages are within 10 km of our research sites? • Thiessen Polygons

  28. Spatial Analysis - Bambara Nut • Did recommended changes to • cultivation techniques change the yield?

  29. Spatial Analysis - Bambara Nut • How did recommended changes to cultivation • techniques change the yield?

  30. GIS Tools - Other Useful Open Source Software Homologue: “Where else in the world is like my plot of land?” Developed by CIAT, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture Can be used for analysis where to introduce pigeon pea or groundnut varieties based on site characteristics e.g. Best Bests project Malawi

  31. GIS Tools - R Scripts – Site Characterization • Alternatively • Climate Analogues • Online tool • R Library

  32. Example of site similarity analysisWhy do certain crops have lower yields in Burkina and Niger compared to southern Mali

  33. GIS Tools - Other Useful Open Source Software GeoCLIM: designed for climatological analysis of historical rainfall and temperature data. It was developed by Tamuka Magadzire of USGS FEWS NET in support of the USAID PREPARED and Global Climate Change activities.  http://earlywarning.usgs.gov/ftp2/GeoCLIM/GeoCLIMv1.1.2.msi

  34. GIS Tools - QGIS highlights • Free High Resolution Imagery - up to 1m • Adding Digital Globe Layers

  35. GIS Tools - QGIS highlights • Processing Toolbox – 900 + FunctionsIncluding options to use R scripts with GUI

  36. GIS Tools - QGIS highlights • Remote Sensing- Semi automatic Classification Plug-in • Direct download of • Sentinel2 and Landsat • imagery from QGIS
