Type of Documentary The true cost is a mixed type of documentary. It's mixed because it includes interviews, observation and narration. This documentary doesn't include interviews as much as other documentaries but it includes lots of observation and narration throughout.
Themes Clothing - Clothing is a theme shown because the main emphasis is about clothing and how it's been made in different countries. Sewing - This is a theme because sewing is the first talent people have in making clothes. Travelling - We see this theme as they travel around the world to see how things are made. Farming - Farming is a theme because many farmers made a living for themselves. Exploitation - This is a theme because many of the workers lost their job or was working in unsafe environments.
Narrative Structure The narrative structure we see in this documentary is open. It's open because there is no final conclusion at the end as no final decision is made in relation to the environment and workers it just has a minor ending therefore its a closed structure. This type of documentary is non linear because it doesn't run in chronological order. Throughout the documentary we are taken to different factories and countries were we are shown flashbacks from previous situations and we are also shown interviews. This documentary also has a multi stranded structure. This is because we are invited into several stories throughout the documentary as we hear stories from different factory workers located in different countries and also stories from farmers and bosses therefore we get a taste of people's real opinions on what life was really like.
Long Shot.The use of long shots in this documentary help show the environment they are in. Camerawork Mid shot Mid shots are used in this documentary to help deliver information in a way that draws our attention. It creates a relationship between the viewer and documentary.
Camerawork Close ups Close ups are used in this documentary to attract our attention. They create a sense of realism and show how the workers actually feel . Establishing shot This type of shot is used to set the scene and location. We see the real living conditions of the workers.
Camerawork Crane shot In this documentary crane shots are used to show the living environment of the workers. It also shows an overshot of their city. Panning Panning is used in this documentary to show us more of the life people are living. It enables us viewers to see things we may of not known about other countries.
Mise-En-Scene The use of the Mise-En-Scene in this documentary shows us a contrast between countries. For example we see Bangladesh as being dirty, unclean, and chaotic because the floor is dirty and surfaces they work on are messy and unhygienic. We also get the impression that it's not safe to live their through the building collapsing. This contrasts to England as it's shown as being clean and peaceful. We see this through everywhere being neat and tidy and we see luxury things like wine glasses which people in Bangladesh wouldn't have. The use of clothing contrasts aswell because people in Bangladesh seem to wear unfitted clothing which is just material but people in England where nice dresses or suites.
BIG TEXT Speech - speech is used by many people as we hear lots of facts and information being told. Screaming - We hear screaming which gives the impression what life is really like. Soundtrack - In this documentary we hear non diegetic music being played. This may of been added to create a lively effect and make people excited to watch it because if it was sad music people are less likely to watch it. Voice over- Voice overs are used in the documentary various times. They are used to get the information out as well as seeing what they're talking about.
BIG TEXT Live footage - in this documentary we see live footage which has been taken from news channels from a while ago. This footage shows how dangerous living in rural areas can be and shows the realism of it. Cuts - cuts are used in this documentary to show the contrast between different areas by cutting in between different locations. Flashbacks - Flashbacks are used to show us what peoples life use to be like and what the industry used to be like so we get the idea of why it needs to change for the better.
Archive Material In this documentary we see different types of archive material being used. One type we see is magazines. These magazines are fashion magazines and shows us different types and the range of clothing. It also gives us an idea of what the industry uses to create ideas. We see different types of brands being used in this documentary like Victoria Secret showing what the industry has to compare with.
Graphics Graphics are used in this documentary to make it more interesting. One type of graphic we see is text on screen. The use of this gives the viewers an idea of the location and more information about the person on screen. We also see the use of comical graphic characters. This creates a sense of humor in the piece and makes it a bit different. We lastly see the use of a translator text which appears on screen. The use of this enables us viewers to still follow on whats happening even if they are speaking in a different language.
