Warming up • Do you like karate, Judo and Wrestling? Why? Why not? • Have you ever seen a wrestling match? When? • Who were the wrestlers? • Who won?
The Match • Duke Frederick invited his daughter Celia and his niece Rosalind to watch a wrestling match. • The match was between a famous, strong and experienced wrestler and a young man who seemed to have no experience in wrestling.
Feeling Pity • Duke Fredrick felt pity for the young man and asked them to go and talk with him to convince him not to wrestle.
Celia and Rosalind begged the young wrestler not to wrestle. • First Celia begged him to leave the attempt then Rosalind spoke so kindly to him.
The young wrestler refused politely saying “I am sorry to deny such beautiful ladies anything. But let your fair eyes and gentle wishes go with me to my trial. If I am conquered, well, I was never happy; if I am killed well, I am willing to die. I shall do my friends no wrong, for I have none to weep for me. Read the previous quotation, then answer the following questions: • Prove that the young wrestler was hopeless. • Which words express his hopeless condition.
The Match • The young wrestler won the match? Why did he win the match although no one expected that he would win?
The Real Reason • The young wrestler was hopeless before the match but the two ladies’ words gave him strength and courage. • He felt that some one loved him and cared about him. He fell in love with Rosalind and this love gave him a desire to live.
Duke Frederick was much pleased with the young wrestler’s courage and wished to know his name and family. He wanted to take him under his care. • The young wrestler’s name is Orlando. His father dies. His father Sir Rowland de Boys. • Frederick got angry because Sir Rowland de Boys was his brother’s best friend and his enemy. • Rosalind was delighted. She said to Celia “My father loved Sir Rowland de Boys, and if I had known this young man was his son, I would have not only begged but wept before he should have risked himself.
After the match: • Rosalind gave Orlando a chain and said “Sir, wear this for me, I wish I could give you a more valuable present”.
