  2. Meningitis • Inflammation of meninges due to: • Bacteria • Viruses • Fungi • Parasites • Cancer • Drugs

  3. Preservative-Free Methylprednisolone Acetate • Synthetic corticosteroid • Treatment for radicular pain from lumbar spine disorders • Lumbar epidural steroid injection • Depresses immune system

  4. Initial Case • Patient in Nashville, TN treated for meningitis for 2 weeks • CSF contained fungal cells from the genus Aspergillus

  5. Other Cases • 13 cases in Tennessee • 1 case in South Carolina • 2 deaths • All had received lumbar steroid injections • 700 administrations from original hospital • Traced back to compound pharmacy

  6. Problems • Fungal meningitis can cause strokes • Aspergillus difficult to grow in culture of CSF • Concern over safety of other steroid preparations • Incubation period of 1-4 weeks
