What is differentiated instruction? • “Differentiation is acknowledging that kids learn in different ways, and responding by doing something about that through curriculum and instruction” ~Carol Ann Tomlinson
Differentiation is … “a way to get students to wrestle with profound ideas, call on students to use what they learn in important ways, help students organize and make sense of ideas and information, and aid students in connecting the classroom with the wider world” ~ Carol Ann Tomlinson
Why differentiated instruction? • All kids are different. • One size does not fit all. • Provides all students with access to all curriculum. • To help every child achieve • To address the special learning styles, intelligences, interests, and needs of our students

Activity • 18.B.2b Describe the ways in which institutions meet the needs of society. Original Lesson Plan: 4th grade students will research an institution using books and encyclopedias that meet the needs of society. Each individual will write a one-page report on an assigned institution.
If You Forget What To Do… • Come up with a new differentiated lesson plan in your groups based on the original standard. • Each group should write ideas on the chart paper or by posting to the wiki. • We will present and discuss our new ideas with the group.
