2010: A change for IGCSE • Coalition government lift the ‘ban’ on IGCSE being offered in state schools • All Awarding Bodies have therefore developed ‘Certificates’ which mirror the content of the IGCSE as closely as possible to provide state schools with all of the benefits of the IGCSE option BUT without the name! • Feedback from teachers leads to improvements to the IGCSE in English Language A and English Literature
Timelines of Development June 2010 – ban lifted on IGCSE in state schools August 2010 – IGCSEs in current form not accredited for use in state schools September 2010 – New Certificates developed October 2010 – Certificates submitted to OfQual December 2010 – Certificates accredited January 2011 – new look IGCSE and certificates launched by Edexcel

Changes for current IGCSE centres • Minimal changes: • For those taking that route, there are now 3 speaking and listening tasks. The additional task is pair work • We have added a Digital text to the Anthology • The Assessment Objectives have been updated • The Mark schemes are clearer
Paper Two or Three • Poetry • EITHER: • 1 hr 30 minute examination (40%) • OR • Coursework (40%) • June 2012 • Paper One • Prose and Drama • 1hr 45 mins • 60% Examination • June 2012 IGCSE in English Literature
Changes for current IGCSE centres • Key changes: • 60/40 split between the papers • Assessment Objectives and Mark schemes improved • Paper One: • 3 new set texts options: Henry V, Much Ado and To Kill a Mockingbird • Paper Two: • Increased paper from 45 minutes to 1hr 30mins • Students answer one question on an unseen text and one question on the • poetry anthology • Raw marks increase from 20 to 40
