Causes of the preterm birth : • the exact cause of preterm birth is unsolved • The four different pathways have been identified that can result in preterm birth are : • precocious fetal endocrine activation, • uterine overdistension, • decidual bleeding, • and intrauterine inflammation/infection

  4. What is Makena? • is a prescription hormone medicine (progestin) used in women who are pregnant and who have delivered a baby too early (preterm) in the past. • is used in these women to help lower the risk of having a preterm baby again. • Makena is for women who: • Are pregnant with one baby • Have had a preterm delivery of one baby in the past

  5. moA : *The mechanism of action for this drug is not well know . *However , it has an effect on the uterine contractions by stopping them

  6. Dosage form : injectioninto the hip area (upper outer area of the buttocks) once a week (every 7 days)…. until week 37 of the pregnancy or when the baby is delivered

  7. Side effects : *Pain, swelling, itching, bruising or a hard bump at the injection site *Hives *Itching *Nausea *Diarrhea
