History of city • History of Venice starting in the mid-fifth century. • Republic of Venice was a maritime power and venues of the Crusades, as well as an important center of commerce (especially the spice trade) and art during the Renaissance. • On the uninhabited islands nearby residents fled mainland cities from barbarian invasions. • They established several settlements here. These are combined in 697 maritime union in Venice
Grand Canal • The Grand Canal is a canal in Venice, Italy. • It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. • Public transport is provided by water buses and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.

Gondola • The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian Lagoon • For centuries gondolas were the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. • However their primary role is to carry tourists on rides. • The gondola is propelled by a person (the gondolier) who stands facing the bow and rows with a forward stroke, followed by a compensating backward stroke.
