SHIFT upgrade • Current SGI machines of Opal, L3, Aleph (shift9) are obsolete and unreliable • Cost of maintenance to 2002 similar to cost of replacement+maintenance • Request “last” upgrade of LEP CPU in this year’s COCOTIME exercise
Option 1: Do Nothing • Maintenance expensive • SGI Challenge machines (shift9) unreliable • No further expansion possible at reasonable cost
Option 2:Replace with all SGI or all DEC • Cheapest • Aleph has problems with SGI: • Migration cost (alprod) • Reservations about reliability, quality of service • Hybrid solution: aloha remains DEC (cost = ??) • Further expansion: 80kCHF / 392 CERN Units • Opal+L3 have problems with DEC • Migration cost
Option 3:Replace with all SGI, keep shift50 • No migration issues • Aleph has problems: • Reservations about SGI reliability, quality of service • Hybrid solution: aloha+shift50 remain DEC (cost = ??) • No expansion possible (machines full)
Option 4:Replace with SGI for L3,Opal DEC for Aleph • Most expensive option • Everybody happy • For Aleph: • One less platform • Uniform desktop + batch environment • Happy with DEC reliability + service • Further expansion: 35kCHF / 370 CERN units
Summary • N.B. Approval depends on “maintenance” contribution from experiments, likely to be pro-rata on installed CERN Units
