  2. 4 Core Texts: Rhetorical Analysis • You will be assigned a number 1-4, which corresponds to a Core Text. • 1: Reagan’s Challenger Address • 2: MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail • 3: Sedaris’s Remembering my Childhood… • 4: Orwell’s Shooting an Elephant • Your task: write a rhetorical analysis introduction for your assigned speech.

  3. Group Assessment • Jigsaw with 3 students who worked with different speeches, so you have 1, 2, 3, 4. • This is your opportunity to confer about your responses and compile them together. • You will receive an individual grade and a group grade.

  4. Sample Group Discussion • Student 1: I wrote that King furthers his purpose by effectively employing diction, and appeals to pathos and logos. • Student 2: That’s pretty good, but make sure you include what type of diction he uses. • Student 1: Oh, that’s right. And do you think we can describe his tone as passionate? • Student 3: I’m not sure, he seems to have a calmer attitude.
