Gamesmanship • Acts of gamesmanship in soccer can range from being entirely within the letter of the Law to being quite illegal.
Gamesmanship is not Fair Play Fair Play vs. Gamesmanship vs. Win at Any Cost
Responsibility of the Referee • The referee must respond to every act of gamesmanship. • Not recognizing or ignoring gamesmanship will lead to some loss of game control.
Types of Gamesmanship • Time Wasting • Encroachment • Feigning / Acting • Intimidation / Flattery
Gamesmanship For each situation must determine: • Was it against the Laws of the Game? • Was it against the Spirit of the Game? • What is the referee’s response?
Time Wasting By: • Goalkeepers • Players • Coach / Manager
Encroachment • 10 Yards (kick off, corner kick) • Penalty Area (goal kick, free kick) • Wall situations • Penalty kick
Feigning / Acting • Fouls • Injuries
Intimidation / Flattery • Physical Intimidation of Players • Verbal Intimidation of Players • Verbal Intimidation of Referee, AR’s, Fourth Official • Flattery of Referee
