  1. Transcatheter Heart valve Replacement

  2. ✅ Our heart has four valves: mitral, aortic, tricuspid, and pulmonary. If there is a problem with any of these valves, the patient might experience breathlessness, fluid accumulation in the lungs, chest pain, loss of consciousness, and even can result in death. ✅ The aortic valve is the most important of the four valves. With age, there might be calcium accumulation in the valve, which can lead to degeneration and calcification, which, in turn, restricts the valve function.

  3. ✅ The only option to treat this condition in the past was open-heart surgery. In this procedure, the affected valve is cut and replaced with the new one. This is called surgical aortic valve replacement. ✅ Metal valves are placed when the surgery is done for the younger patients. After the surgery, the patient should take blood-thinning medicines throughout their life. For older people, a bioprosthetic valve is placed. This valve has tissues inside it; hence, these people can stop taking blood thinners 3 months after the surgery.

  4. ✅ Surgery is recommended when the patients experience the symptoms mentioned above, like breathlessness. The life expectancy of the patient can be increased after a successful surgery. But if, in any case, the surgery cannot be performed, then the patient's life expectancy reduces by 50% in 2 years. The Alternative Surgical aortic valve replacement might not be an option for older patients and patients with diabetes, BP, stroke, and other conditions. Transcatheter heart valve replacement is the alternative option for these patients.

  5. The cardiologist inserts a tube through the leg or near the collarbone, and it is used to open the shrunken heart valve. This procedure has become quite popular worldwide in the last 25 years. Kauvery Hospital Transcatheter heart valve replacement was first done only for aortic valves, but now it can be done for other valves too.

  6. At Kauvery Hospital, we have some of the best-experienced cardiologists in Chennai and the equipment to perform even complicated medical procedures.
