Dame Hannah Rogers Trust • Charitable Trust based in South Devon– supporting young people with severe physical & learning disabilities.
Comprised of : • Residential School (ages 9-18) • Hannahwood - Adult transitional placement – both residential and day facility (ages 19-25) • Children’s respite centre • Currently developing a post 25 provision • Outreach services • Seale Hayne
Client Group People with a range of aetiologies, • Majority have Cerebral Palsy, • Various syndromes – Retts, Angelmans, Otahara • Dual diagnosis of CP & autism • Acquired neurological disorders • Many young people have PMLD and very high medical needs
SLT Dept • Very lucky to be well staffed • 4 therapists (approx 3 WTE) • 3 assistants (approx 2 WTE) • Also work as part of MDT with nurses, physios, OT, care & education staff
Challenges for I.I at DHRT • TC audit showed I.I was occurring but not consistently. • How do we record & monitor? • How do we ensure consistency? • How do we ensure it is part of total communication? • Developed an Intensive Interaction working party which resulted in….
Tackling the problems • Rolling staff training – Both practitioner and more basic – thank you Cath! • Staff mentoring system • Regular I.I meetings – practitioner and trainees and P.A’s • Encouraging classes to incorporate it into sessions e.g. Tac Pac • Timetabled slots in adult provision • Intensive interaction folders
Evidencing • How do we record I.I? • Base lining – x3 videos of ‘normal’ interaction – graph • Video as many sessions as possible and complete record form & if possible practitioner form – file in young person’s folder • Review videos – x3 videos – graph
Why try Intensive Interaction ? • Enjoyment & leisure • Attention • Interacting with another person • Practising underlying communication skills – turn taking, awareness of others, anticipation
Hopes for the future of I.I DHRT • Cascade of information & training continues throughout the Trust • Greater understanding of the benefits of II for many of our clients
