Basic Wastewater Treatment Processes In the 1920s, scientists observed that these bacteria could be contained, in a vessel, and with the addition of oxygen to the wastewater, masses of microorganisms grew and rapidly metabolized organic pollutants.
Wastewater Facility History • Steel Wastewater Plant Purchased ”USED” by Summit City approximately 1982. • Mapleturn Utilities purchased Summit City in 1987. • The facility had an originally anticipated lifespan of 20 to 30 years when it was purchased “NEW”… WHEN WILL IT FAIL?
Wastewater Facility - Tour • Originally set up as (2) Extended Aeration systems, capable of processing 75,000 gallons of waste per day. • By redesigning the piping layout, the system was changed over to a Contact Stabilization process in 1986. This change increased the processing capabilities to 150,000 gallons per day.
Wastewater Facility - Tour • Routine maintenance, including sandblasting and the application of rust inhibiting paint have been performed over the years. • Time, weather and the actual treatment of wastes has taken a toll on the facility. • Many portions of the facility have corroded beyond repair and may pose a safety hazard.
Options & Consequences • Do Nothing other than Continual Routine Maintenance. • Eventually the current wastewater treatment facility will fail. • Whether the failure occurs in 2 years or 5 years or 10 years, it will fail. • When the facility fails, untreated waste would flow into the White River. The consequences of this could be catastrophic…these potentially include a fish kill, thousands of dollars in fines, the clean up costs associated with the spill, and the possibility of a shut down of the facility by the EPA.
Options & Consequences • Design, Purchase and Build a New Wastewater Treatment Plant. • Mapleturn has been working with The Schneider Corporation for the past year to come up with the best and most cost effective solution. • The Preliminary Engineering Study is about 80% complete and the types of treatment facilities being considered have been narrowed down to 2 or 3.
Facility Types for Consideration Sanitaire Sequencing Batch Reactor • Both the Sanitaire and AeroMod systems are Physical types of treatment plants. They work similar to the process that Mapleturn is currently using. • A Constructed Wetland is Old Technology – that has made a comeback as it is environmentally friendly. This is an example of a Biological treatment process. AeroMod Steel & Concrete Constructed Wetlands
What is a Constructed Wetland • Natural wetlands act as bio-filters, removing sediments and pollutants from the water. • Constructed wetlands, which are man-made, emulate these features. They are capable of treating discharge from storm water runoff and wastewater facilities. • A constructed wetland would also create habitat for wildlife. CONS Traditionally small facilities, Mapleturn would be several times larger than any previously approved system in Indiana. Require Large Site Area Surge Flows can be a Challenge for Treatment Effectiveness. Not well suited for Floodplain Areas or Areas Susceptible to High Ground Water. PROS Natural System Reduced Permitting Requirements Reduced Power and Similar Operational Expenses Reduced Testing and Reporting Requirements Pleasing Aesthetics Pros & Cons – Constructed Wetland
Performance Methodology • In keeping with the Mapleturn management philosophy of cost efficiency; any portion of the current facility that can be rehabilitated, will be rehabilitated. • Every effort to utilize local building materials will be made. • In-house manpower will be used where possible to help reduce the project costs.
