Welcome to Medieval Japan 日本へようこそ Front
Hey guys, I’ve been having an awesome time over here! Everything is beautiful and so different. The architecture is breath taking. The castles, or Daimyo, the lords live in are huge. Most of them are closer to the mountains though. I can barely understand what anyone says. Everyone here speaks Japanese, and a handful of men can speak Chinese. I have yet to find a women who can speak Chinese, but I love listening to the Haikus and Tankas many people write. The only thing that can come close to the poems are the paintings I’ve managed to get a quick glance of. I made a friend named Murasaki, after the aristocrat and writer, and she took me to the Noh Theatre with her family. Her family is very wealthy and very reserved. Her father is one of the few men I’ve met that speaks Chinese. She explained the story to me and I was entranced by the performance. I spent the rest of the day with her. She invited me to the temple, or tera寺,with her and her family. They practice Zen Buddhism like most people here and live in this amazing house. I attached a picture of their house. I’ll keep in touch! Lots of love, Adriana Flores Carlos Flores & Lucia Sansone 12345 sw678 ave Miami, FL 33123 Back
日本へようこそ Welcome to Medieval Japan
Hey Guys, Sorry I haven’t written in such a long time. Things have gotten bad here. Over the past few weeks there has been invasions left an right. We’ve been told that most of the invasions have been by the Mongols. The lords are trying to keep everything under control with the help of the Samurai. In essence the samurai are like the knights of Japan, and they are very honored here. I attached a picture of a painting of a Samurai just to give you an idea of what they look like. They also have shoguns, chief military commanders in Medieval Japan, working with their militaries in order to push back any new invasions. Samurais are very faithful to their shoguns. Some of these shoguns reward their warriors with pieces of land over which they ruled. Daimyo owned territories and became the lords of this area. In a way they also own all the crops produced on their land. I’ve noticed that the Emperor is become more of a symbol and less of a ruling body. I’ve heard Murasaki’sfather talk about how Japan had become a Bakufu, and that the warrior pretty much rule. They had been battling over seven weeks and we seem to be losing. The only advantage we have is that a typhoon managed to push back the Mongolians into Korea. We celebrated the victory but there is strain. The war cost so much and all the warlords are falling into debt. I feel like this Bakufu is not going to last much longer. Pretty soon we may go back to being a Monarchy. Well I guess I’ll try to talk to you guys later. Times are hard and I miss you. Hopefully I can write back soon!
