  1. Castration(KhasiKarna)

  2. Objectives • Define the term castration • Identify the reasons for castrating animal • Indicate the best age to castrate animal • Describe the methods of castration in animals • Identify the correct way to care for animal after castration

  3. What is castration? • Definition: removing the testicles of a male animal • The functioning of the testicles is stopped by preventing the production of the male hormones so that the animal is unable to reproduce

  4. Why do we castrate buck? • To prevent them from mating after they reach puberty. • Reduce goaty smell • enhance on-farm safety for animals, producers and employees

  5. When to Castrate? • castration should take place at the youngest age possible • Castration becomes more difficult and painful with age and the chances of complications increase. • Further, castration is accomplished more easily and the wound heals more quickly in very young animals

  6. Sanitation • In all techniques the hands and castration instruments should be sanitized between each kid to prevent the spread and/or introduction of infection

  7. Methods of castration in kid • Burdizzo • Rubber rings (elastrator) • Open wound castration (emasculator or knife)

  8. Burdizzo • Spermatic cord and blood vessels leading to the testicles are cut • Testicles tend to stop functioning for a while and then stop functioning and degenerate

  9. site

  10. Locate spermatic cord

  11. PROCEDURE • . Place the jaws of the burdizzo onto the upper scrotum, leaving the rudimentary teats above the crushing point. Do not crush the septum or tissue between the testicles. Rather, do one side of the scrotum at atime.

  12. CONTIN….

  13. Clamp the burdizzo over the cord on the side of the scrotum you are doing first. You cungenerally hear a clicking sound as the cord is crushed. Locate the cord on the other side of the scrotum .

  14. Advantages to Burdizzo castration • Bloodless • Infection or maggot infestation seldom occurs

  15. Cont… • When you are done, you may see a mark on each side of the scrotum. The animal may be sore and move slowly for about a day. At first the scrotum will swell up a little, but the testicles will gradually shrink over the next few weeks leaving a small scrotal sac. • Even though this is supposed to be a bloodless method, it is possible to break skin with the corners of the burdizzo. Examine each crushed area carefully after castration. If the skin is broken, apply an antiseptic like alcohol. Also give an injection of tetanus antitoxin if available

  16. After care • Beware of fly attacks and infection (especially with emasculator method) • Treat wounds with wound aerosol which discourages fly attacks • If swelling and pain are severe and/or if the animal develops a temperature, a suitable antibiotic should be injected

  17. complication • seroma formation • Ischemia • necrosis • swelling • and inflammation at the surgery site. • hemorrhage, • and signs of infections such as depression, • decreased appetite

  18. Scrotal haematoma

  19. If persistent hemorrhage does occur, it may be necessary to pack the scrotum with a sterile towel, or gauze roll, with removal in 48 hours. • When the sterile packing is removed, any retained blood clot should be gently expressed. • antibiotics are appropriately recommendedfor 5 to 7 days

  20. prevention • Ice pack for 10 minutes post op • Animal kept clean environment • Examine animal for 10 days

  21. Treatment when hematoma occur • broad spectrum antibiotics Cephalexin, clavamox • Analgesics tramadol • Hot packing • Aspiration
