Why do this…? • To enhance and diversify our local economy by attracting, expanding and retaining businesses • Diversified and complementary business base will support existing companies and our community • Develop educational opportunities and stimulate professional development for tenants and the public • Represents new way of approaching the concept of economic development • Quality of life and community participation by residents is enhanced when more people live and work in the same place
How we got here… • Airport Industrial Area Blue Ribbon Committee Report • Business Incubator identified as a strategy • Policymakers, jurisdiction staff, and community leaders supported exploring the concept • Possible location at former JAL facility • Could lead to potential growth of new companies in remaining available office space in the AIA and elsewhere
What we’ve done… • Secured financial support for development of feasibility study and business plan for a sector-focused incubator • City of American Canyon • City of Napa • County of Napa • Napa-Lake Workforce Investment Board (WIB) • Gained support from community organizations and stakeholders, including Napa Chamber of Commerce • Incorporated as a CA nonprofit and will file for 501(C)(3) • Collected input from stakeholders and community
What’s next? • Business Plan and Feasibility Study completed end of November • Share information and findings with stakeholders • Fund development • Identifying partners • Implement the strategies outlined in the plan • Carol Kraus Lauffer is a Partner with Business Cluster Development (BCD), BCD has assisted in the development of nearly 70 business incubators across the U.S., many of which are recognized as best practices programs.
