  1. R1234YF Service Equipment Status of R1234YF Service Equipment 2/06/09

  2. R1234YF Service Equipment • New SAE Standards: • J2843 Recovery Recycling Recharge Equipment for R1234YF • J2851 Recovery Only Equipment for R1234YF

  3. R1234YF Service Equipment • SAE J2843 • Same performance requirements as SAE J2788 • 95% Recovery Efficiency • +/- 1 Ounce Recovery Accuracy • +/- .5 Ounce Charge Accuracy • Same purity requirements as SAE J2788 • 500 ppm HBR (Oil) • 150 ppm Noncondensables • 50 ppm moisture

  4. R1234YFService Equipment • New Safety Requirements J2843/J2851 • ANSI/ISA-S12.12.01-2000 Reference NFPA-70 and NFPA497 Class 1/Division2/Zone2 • Class 1 Flammable gas or vapor • Division 2 Flammable atmosphere only occurs due to abnormal operation leaks, lost ventilation, etc • Zone 2 Flammable atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation

  5. R1234YF Service Equipment SAE J2843 and J2851 new requirements : • Class 1/Division 2/Zone 2 requires nonincendive method: • Use of nonarcing make/break components by: • Sealing • Limiting current and voltage • Using arc suppression methods • Limiting the surface temperature of exposed components to < 405C

  6. R1234YFService Equipment SAE J2843 and J2851 new requirements: Control discharge of refrigerant normally vented during the service process. • Collecting and directing refrigerant into the garage ventilation system. • Air Purge • Oil Drain • Vacuum Pump Exhaust

  7. R1234YF Service Equipment • Other Changes from R-134a Equipment: • New Charge Coupling and Hoses • New unique tank fitting and tank color • Air Purge Circuit Calibration

  8. R1234YF Service Equipment Related standards: • J2888 Service Standard for Hose, Fittings and Couplers for Mobile AC systems. • J2844 Refrigerant and purity and container standards for refrigerant used in mobile equipment. • J639 Revision • Service ports for R1234YF

  9. R1234YF Service Equipment Test Status: • Prototypes deployed supporting mobile AC development . • Months of operation with no issues. • Recovery efficiency and charge accuracy same as R134a (as expected) • Preliminary recycling testing being conducted.

  10. R1234YFService Equipment Open issues in finalizing standards and designs: • Test agencies approved by the EPA (UL and ETL) have not committed to a plan for testing and certification. • A proposed revision to UL1963 is being submitted to expedite final construction definition and test requirements. • Need to take into account and incorporate global requirements.
