Plastids By: Amanda Sabol and NOT Veronica Zimmerman
The Chloroplast • Specialized type of plastid • Lens-shaped • Chlorophyll gives it a green pigment • Static and rigid appearance but actually very mobile • Membranes divide space into three compartments: the intermembrane space, the stroma and the thylakoid space TEM of chloroplasts
Structure of the Chloroplast Thylakoids – flattened, interconnected sacs Granna– stacks of thylakoids Stroma – fluid outside thylakoids/contains DNA, ribosomes, enzymes Thylakoid membrane - site of light-dependent photosynthetic reactions
Functions of Chloroplasts • Aid in photosynthesis • Contain chlorophyll and other enzymes/molecules that assist in the photosynthetic production of sugar • Move around the cell along tracks of the cytoskeleton
Leucoplasts • Usually smaller than chloroplasts • Vary in shape • Colorless plastids found in non-photosynthetic plant tissues • Store starch, proteins and lipids • Synthesize fatty acids, amino acids and other compounds TEM of a leucoplast
Amyloplasts • A type of leucoplast • Colorless plastids that synthesize and store starch (amylose) • Particularly found in roots and tubers TEM of an amyloplast
Chromoplasts • Responsible for both pigment synthesis and storage • Contain pigments that give fruits and flowers their orange and yellow hues TEM of a chromoplast
What are thylokoids? Flattened interconnected sacs Stacks of granna Fluid outside of the stroma
What is true about leucoplasts? They are usually larger than chloroplasts They have a consistent shape They are colorless plastids found in non-photosynthetic plant tissues
Which one of these plastids has a green pigment? Chromoplasts Amyloplasts Chloroplasts
What is the thylakoid membrane? It is the site of light-dependent photosynthetic reactions It gives fruits and flowers their orange and yellow hues It stores amylose
Which of these is false about chloroplasts? Membranes divide space into two compartments which are the stromaand the thylakoid space They are lens-shaped They are static and rigid in appearance but actually very mobile
