IOM • IOM works in the four broad areas of • migration management: • Migration and development • Facilitating migration • Regulating migration • Forced migration
The basis for IOM’s work in migration and development can be found in its Constitution, which states “that migration may stimulate the creation of new economic opportunities in receiving countries and that a relationship exists between migration and the economic, social and cultural conditions in developing countries”.
According to the 2007 Strategy, “IOM will focus on the following activities [in relation to migration and development]”: International policy dialogue; Policy-oriented research; Operational programmes to build the administrative and managerial capacity of governments and develop and implement strategies to more effectively link migration and development.
Three main ways in which migration impacts on development: • Transfer of population and workforce • Transfer of know-how and knowledge • Transfer of financial assets
IOM currently implements migration and development projects under three project types: Economic and Community Development; Remittances; Skills Transfer, Capacity-Building and Virtual Return Projects.
