A presentationofmyschool and the implementationofsustainabledevelopment and activecitizenship in the school curriculum and activities, with a referenceto the schoolparticipationto a Comeniusmultilateral project “Differentbutequal in Europe” for the assertionof the humanrights and the fightagainst women’s descrimination. • A generalviewofSustainabledevelopment in Italy. Local Agenda 21 • The schoolinvolvement in ecologicalissues and the resultsof a school project on wastedisposal and sustainabledevelopmentwith a collectionof the students ‘materials on the topic. (As anintegrationto the presentation)

  6. Location The townof Carini stands on a hill, 181 metersabovesealevel, on the mountains Ericini. The townwasidentifiedwith the mysteriousHyccara, whoaccordingto the legendwasfoundedbyDaedalus. Locatedabout 26 km from Palermo and about 10 from the airportof Punta Raisi, itsterritoryextendsto the sea. The countryhas a richartistic, cultural and historicalheritage and itisalsofamousforitssitesofgreatarchaeological interest, a legacyofancientsettlements. In recentdecades, the countryhasundergoneconsiderablechangessince the industrial development and the building expansionhaveradicallychangeditsinternalterritorialmorphologywith a high rate ofmigrantscomingfrom the townof Palermo.

Istituto d’Istruzione Superiore“Ugo Mursia” The Mursia Instituteis a secondaryschoollocated in Carini and includesthreedifferentcourses: • A vocational Catering and Hospitalitycoursespecializing in restaurant and bar service forcooks, waiters and bartenders and tourism • A science oriented-lyceum • A HumanSocio-Psycho-Pedagogicallyceum Ourschoolissuppliedwithlaboratoriesforchemical and astronomicstudies, a kitchenlaboratory, a linguistic and computer science laboratory, a reception desk forwelcoming and hospitality, a big auditorium and a wellequippedgymnasium. Ourinstitutionhasgotabout 1200 studentscomingfrom a diversified social background. The schoolinsists in a risky area with a high rate of drop- out and problems of integration of migrants and weakstudents, thereforeour “Mission”is to enhance social cohesion, inclusion and legality.

  12. What’s sustainabledevelopment? For our students • According to  Our Common Future and the Brundtland Report, the definition of sustainable development is “meeting the needs of the present days without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” promoting environmental, economic and social well-being for today and tomorrow • A Sustainabledevelopmentstrategyaims at improving the quality of life ensuringprosperity, environmentalprotection, social cohesionand inclusion • A real progress integrates social, cultural, economical and politicalactionsasinseparable and interdipendentcomponentsof the human progress • Governementsshouldbecapableofpromotinganintegratedapproachwherepolicy-makers, education, research and finance haveto play anactiverolefor the developmentofall the world’s populations.

Activecitizenship and sustainabledevelopment in the school curriculum • In secondaryschoolsstudentsacquirecompetencesofactivecitizenshipas part of the curriculum in the first twoyears (biennio) • Students are involved in environmental and ecologicalissuesas cross-cultural competencesthankstoextra-curricularprojects • The conceptsoflegality, democracy, social cohision are a priority in myschoolas a part of the school “Mission” • Students are sensitive to environmentalissuesas in the localcontextwastedisposal and management is a hugeconcernoften due to municipaldifficulties and lack of funds

Stepsforsustainabledevelopment in Italy • 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit toimplement the guidelinesof the Agenda 21 • CIPE Inter-ministerialCommiteeforEconomic Planning adopted the guidelinesof Agenda 21 in Italy (1993) • 1994 AalborgStrategicalguidelinesforsustainabledevelopment • 1999 Ferrara Charter put intoaction the guidelinesofLocal Agenda 21 • 1999 Firenze Documentpromoted a newapproachtolocalsustainability • 2001 A newenvironmentalactionstrategyhasbeenadoptedby CIPE foranhighlyintegrated vision of the followingpriorities: - Climate - Nature and bio-diversity - Management of the naturalresources and wastedisposal - Qualityof life in urbanareas

Sustainabledevelopment in Italy • The Environmental Action Strategy for Sustainable Development in Italy (NSDS) was developed by the Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea, in accordance with the 6th Environmental Action Plan and the guidelines of Barcelona 2002 European Council and was approved by the Inter-ministerial Committee for Economic Planning (CIPE) on 2nd August 2002 (CIPE Deliberation n. 57 of 2nd August 2002 (available in Italian only). • CIPE an Inter-ministerial body responsible for the national economic policies has the task to put into action the NSDS, with a double effect: on one hand, the integration of the environmental concerns in the decision-making processes and on the other hand, the increasing co-ordination among the three pillars of development. • 2007 Implementationof the first National report to EU with the adoptionof a strong co-ordinationamongCentralAdministrators and Regions, in collaborationwith the Ministryfor the Environment , Land and Sea.

Local Agenda 21 in Italy • The local Agenda 21 persuits the goalsofimplementing social cohesion and solidarietyaswellas the protectionof nature and environment. • The Ferrara Charter following the guidelinesofAalborg and Goteborg indications, hasbeenadoptedby 288 Administrations and the numberisstill on the increase. • In general, the conceptofsustainabledevelopment and the guidelinesof the Local Agenda 21 havebeenadoptednotonlyby the local and nationaladministrationsbutalsoby the common citizens so thatexpressionsasactivecitizenship, protectionof the environment, eco-city, pollution, climatechanges, waste treatment, integratedcollectionhaveentered the dailydebateswith a generalmobilizationby the Italiancitizens.

ActiveCitizenship and civilinitiatives in Italy • 1.400 millionsignaturesweredeliveredto the Supreme Court on July 2010 callingfor a referendum on the public managmentof water, after the Ronchi’s Decreestatedthat water service and other public servicesaswastemanagmentwerereservedto private companies. • 95% of the citizens on a referendum votedtoabolish the implementationofnuclearpowerplants and in defenceofrenewable, safe and cleanenergy . • A largemovementofteachers, studentsfrom high school and universityprotested in 2010 against the government’s cuts in eduction and research, withhundredsofschoolsoccupiedthroughout the country. • Million women and mendemonstrated in the streets in February 2011, tovindicate the dignity and the rightsof the women and a properlegislationtofightsexualabuse and violenceagainst the women.

Italiangovernment’s priorities • Adoptingstrategiesto reduce carbondioxideemissionstomeet the Europeanreductiontargetswithinvestments on renewablesources, energyefficiency and savings • enhancing a nationalbiodiversitystrategyfor the protectionof the animals and the flora • Promoting a newmodelofdevelopmentcentred on the enforcementof the fundamentalhumanrights, the reductionof social inequality and a realcommitment on environmentalsustainability • Providingincentivenessfor an ecologicalconversion of industrial production and consumptionpatterns, supportingcompanies investing in the field of research in favour of the environment • Promotingsustainabledevelopmentissues and the idea ofactivecitizenship in education and in schools
