  1. Convection Currents and the Mantle EQ: How is heat transferred?

  2. heat ice EQ: How is heat transferred? • Heat transfer - the movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object. • Energy is transferred from the warmer lemonade to the cold ice through heat. Different materials require different amounts of energy to change temperature.

  3. Heat Transfer • There are three types of heat transfer • Radiation • Conduction • Convection EQ: How is heat transferred?

  4. Radiation • Transfer of energy through empty space • No direct contact between a heat source and an object EQ: How is heat transferred?

  5. Conduction • Heat transfer by direct contact of particles of matter • Heating a spoon in a pot of soup • Particles near the bottom of the spoon heat faster as they are heated, so they bump into other particles and heat them too. • Gradually the entire spoon heats up • When you touch the spoon, conduction transfers heat to your hand EQ: How is heat transferred?

  6. Convection EQ: How is heat transferred? • Heat transfer involving the movement of liquids and gasses • Caused by difference in temperature and density within a fluid • Density – a measure of how much mass is in a substance

  7. Convection – What happens? • Liquid or gas is heated and the particles move faster • As they move faster, particles spread apart and take up more space and density decreases EQ: How is heat transferred?

  8. Convection • As the fluid cools, particles move slower and settle closer together, increasing density, and sinking EQ: How is heat transferred?

  9. Convection Currents • Flow that transfers heat within a fluid • Heating and cooling of the fluid, changes in the fluid’s density, and the force of gravity combine to set convection currents in motion EQ: How is heat transferred?

  10. Class Work and Homework EQ: How is heat transferred? Fill In • What did I learn • Confused • Say • Read pages F25 – F27, questions 1-5
