Number of Road Markings There are fourteen different road marks that a driver needs to know in order to be a safe and precautious driver.
A. Yellow Center Lines 1. Separate traffic flow going in opposite directions
L. Solid Line 2. On a motorist’s side of the center line means do not pass
M. Edge Lines 3. Separate the shoulder from the travel lane and show the edges of highways
J. White Stop Lines 4. Show where to stop at stop signs or traffic signals
F. White Lines 5. Separate traffic going the same way when there is more than one lane; show edges of the road
H. Yellow Solid Lines 6. Prohibit passing; stay in the lane
D. White Special Markings 7. Show special conditions, such as STOP AHEAD, SCHOOL and R X R
K. Dashed Lines 8. On a motorist’s side of the center line of the road mean that passing is permitted when safe
N. White Diamonds 9. Indicate high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes reserved for a particular vehicle type or vehicles carrying multiple riders, as identified by posted regulatory signs
G. Road Arrows 10. When used with other signs, show the correct direction a motorist must make in that particular lane
