  5. The Middle Colonies

  6. New Netherland is captured by the English and given by the King to his brother James, the Duke of York. Duke of York became proprietor – he owned and controlled the land He took a large chunk of it and named it New York and gave the rest to . . . John Berkeley George Carteret East Jersey West Jersey 1702 – the colonies joined to form New Jersey

  7. Government in New York & New Jersey Proprietor Breaks land into pieces to be bought or rented Governor Council Representative Assembly – colonists could take a part in government.

  8. William Penn • William Penn was a Quaker - a religious group that believed all Christians should be free to worship in their own way. • Penn was granted the colony of Pennsylvania by the King of England, because of a debt to his family.

  9. Pennsylvania • Pennsylvania became a place where all Christians could live in peace. • A later grant of more land eventually became Delaware.

  10. More Freedom in Pennsylvania • Penn developed a colony with more freedom than others • Freedom of speech • Freedom of religion • Elected representatives to an assembly • Treated Native Americans well

  11. Philadelphia • Penn had a well thought out plan for Pennsylvania’s largest city, Philadelphia. • Where two rivers meet, so ships could easily dock • Wide, straight roads • During the 1700’s, Philadelphia became a center of trade and the largest city in the colonies.

  13. Benjamin Franklin • Philadelphia’s most famous citizen. • Published a newspaper • Published Poor Richard’s Almanac, a book of stories, jokes, and sayings.

  14. A Lot of Firsts • Franklin also helped start Philadelphia’s first public library, fire company, and hospital

  15. Scientist Too • Franklin also conducted many experiments • Kite in a lightning storm to prove that lightning was electricity

  16. And Inventor • Franklin also was responsible for many inventions: • Franklin Stove • Lightning Rod • Swim fins • Bifocals • Odometer • Glass Armonica
