What Is a Website? • A website is a collection of web pages (documents that are accessed through the Internet). • A Website is a collection of Web files on a particular subject that includes a beginning file called a home page.
Home page • is the first Web page that is displayed after starting a Web browser like Netscape's Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Firefox, google chrome and other.
What is Internet? • An interconnected group of networks and data warehouses originally developed by the Department of Defense as a way of providing secure, high speed, worldwide communications and access to data for critical government and research use. • Was opened up to commercial usage in the late 1980’s. • The Internet carries information and various different services for example email, chat, file transfer, and web pages.
Where is the Internet? • Because the Internet is a collection of computers, there is no static physical location or central point to it.
What type of connection is best? • Dial-Up • DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) • TV Cable modem • Broadband and Optical • Wireless Internet Connection • Satellite
Basic Requirements for Internet Connection • Computer • Web browser • Modem/Tel.Line • Internet Service Provider
What should I look for in an ISP? • Business orientation and experience • Availability • Technical staff – After Sales Services • Network operations center • Organization stability • Full ranges of services • Customer base • Comparison shop
Things you can do with your Internet connection • Booking flights online • Connect with friends and family members abroad • Research information about anything • Online banking/ Schedule & pay bills online • Earn extra money online • Blogging can be a hobby or a job • Put your name on a dot com and manage it.
Where are websites located? • Websites are physically saved on computers. These are special computers called servers which “serve” up the websites they have saved on their hard drives on demand. • Servers are usually run by web hosts, but can also be run by individuals or companies.
What is a domain name? • A domain name is a word or words separated by dots (e.g. www.ifsu.edu.ph), and which corresponds to a number, known as an internet protocol (IP) number. • This IP number or address is used by computers to locate other computers and servers on the internet. • A domain name is used because it is easier for humans to remember and work with words rather than numbers.
What is a web host? • A web host is a service provider that stores your website on a server, and allows your website to be seen by anyone in the world who has an internet connection and a browser.
Deciding on the Content • Who is your target audience? • What is that you are trying to sell them? • What is the goal of your website? The most important rule however, just like in brick and mortar business, is to be factual when distributing information over the world wide web.
A Brief Design Guide • Put your most important information near the top of the document because this is what the viewer is going to read first. If you cannot capture the viewer’s interest, they will not continue to read past the first few lines. • Be as brief as possible. Each page in your site should be no more than one and a half pages long.
A Brief Design Guide • Do not overuse graphics. Many people do not have fast connections and it takes a long time to download pages with many graphics. • Try to use headlines to break up your website and its pages. Make it easy to navigate. • If your page looks crowded or is too long, make it into two or more pages linked together.
A Brief Design Guide • Avoid blinking lights and scrolling text unless it is absolutely necessary. • Provide your e-mail address in a hypertext, or as a hyperlinked graphics.
Things to do Before Publishing the Website • Do all hyperlinks work? • Is the site easy to navigate? • Is the site easy to read? • Does the site load quickly over a standard modern connection? 60 – 90 seconds? • Is all your information correct? • Have you checked for grammatical and spelling errors? • Is there a balance between white space and overcrowding on each page? • Does your email link work properly?
Workshop – Site Map (1Hr) • Discuss with your companion what would be the content of your school’s website. • Create your own site map • Write it down on a one whole sheet of bond paper then submit it.
